Above the Clouds

Madeira rises out of the Atlantic until its ridgelines clear the weather entirely. We climbed the stone stairways of Pico do Arieiro at dawn and watched the peaks break through a sea of cloud, walked the fog forest at Fanal, and followed the north coast from waterfall to waterfall until the villages lit up below us at dusk.
